What is a Minecraft modloader?
A modloader is the runtime that lets Minecraft load mods. Vanilla Minecraft has no mod support — modloaders patch the game and expose hooks so mod code can run. The big four in 2026: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt.
The four mainstream modloaders
Forge
The original modloader (2011). Most legacy content mods (industrial mods, magic mods, large adventure modpacks) target Forge. Still the largest modlibrary by volume.
NeoForge
Community fork of Forge (2023). For Minecraft 1.20.1 and onwards, the modding community largely moved to NeoForge. Cleaner governance and faster releases than Forge.
Fabric
Lightweight, performance-focused modloader (2019). Excellent for tech mods, performance optimisers (Sodium, Lithium, Phosphor) and rapid 1.x updates.
Quilt
A fork of Fabric (2022) that aims for better mod compatibility and a more open governance model. Smaller mod library than Fabric, but mods often target both.
Server-side considerations
Most servers run one of:
- Paper / Purpur — server fork (not a modloader) for Bukkit/Spigot plugins. Best for performance.
- Forge / NeoForge — full mods.
- Fabric / Quilt — performance + tech mods.
- Mohist / Magma — hybrid (Forge + Bukkit plugins). Stability varies.
